AN ISLAND LOST ! THE DODECANESE

This Little Dog Is A Pointer!

Used and abused as are all hunting dogs in Greece, this sweet, little dog was rescued and believe it or not, is being fostered by a foreigner and awaiting a permanent home. Before her luck turned, this little tyke was the victim of God knows what, compounded by human indifference. She fared by herself on the streets for a very long time.

Alone in the back alleyways of the island, she taught herself to eat and drink. And believe it or not, this courageous little dog can play and she is affectionate and gentle. AH! The nature of the "beast".

A good friend of mine who is privy to the sordid details of the story sent me these photos. I was horrified and mystified that such misery and obvious torment could be ignored by passersby.

An expert informed us that a conventional leg hold trap would not be strong enough to snap the dogs snout but an ax could do the job quite well.

Some humans regardless of ethnicity, religion or political affiliation just creep along the sordid bottom of society!

Wouldn't you all agree that it is time for the Greek state to pull herself up by her collective bootstraps and address the cruelty and neglect issues which are tarnishing the image of her exquisitely beautiful country?

What can we possibly do to convince this country, which thousands of years ago gave us democracy, medicine, philosophy and modern day ethics, to measure up "today" to its ancient contribution to mankind?

A Sharp Whistle is Heard
& Then:

"Come on Athena, let's go for a walk".

The beautiful and fearful shepherd obediently follows her master along the sandy beach. As she trots hesitantly a few steps behind her "master," she trembles, not sure what awaits her. The man bends down, picks up some heavy rocks and with a wire, secures the rocks around his dog's neck.

The dog, always obedient, faithful and never questioning, follows the man into the sea. The man, without a backward glance, walks away oblivious to the raw fear and frantic struggling of his faithful dog who succumbs to the weight of the rocks and the power of the sea.

Welcome to Greece!

The compassionate man who waded in to the sea to retrieve her poor, battered body does not wish to be featured as he fears retribution from the villagers and the island officials.

He begs us not to name the island.
He begs us to shield his face and identity!

We beg you to help!

Who will convince the Greek authorities and the citizens of this European member nation to own up to it's failings, to accept constructive criticism, professional assistance and reconcile it's escalating abuse and neglect issues?  When will we see gestures symbolic of reform?
